The day we came home from Utah we noticed a ton of dead bees on our front porch. Upon further investigation we discovered that our eves had, in fact, been infested with bees. We had a Bee Keeper come out and exterminate the hive. He came about 9pm with a red light (bees return at night and cannot see red light) and it took him about an hour. Then, it was a day and a half of carpentry work to rip off the old eves, clean out all the honey, hive and rebuild crack free eves. We had to fix all the eves on our house or else they said they would just come back and start building in the next crack. That is a grand total of $1600 - for bees. It was great entertainment for the kids and Warren thought it was cool to meet a real Bee keeper but STILL! Ugh.
From the outside you couldn't see a whole lot but this entire corner of the eve was the home of the hive.
These poor carpenters were being dive bombed the entire day by angry bees - who upon arrival from their journeys found their little home away from home was gonzo.
Bag of hive #1 - He said he thought their was approximately 30,000 bees. If you look closely, all the little white wormy things are larve ready to hatch. The hive was ready to explode!
Next time you come to my house I want to hear oohs and ah's about our new eves, ya got it? ;) A pure waste of $1600 bucks. Can you tell it was painful writing the check?

waste o' 1600 bucks? i can't believe they were so prosperous in your eves! that's incredible! too bad you just couldn't take a quick bee-keeping course and maximize on the bees efforts and your dollars. it could've been jest like the good ol' days - sendin' warren out to gather eggs. "warren, mind climbin' that thar ladder and fetchin' me some honey for yer biscuits this mornin'?" 'course, who could refuse a request like that?! ;)
that almost made me throw up... you've had some bad luck lately. must mean something good is around the corner!
I know. After seeing what they did I was like "Heck, give me a bee suit and I could do that!". Anyways, I was hopeful to get some fresh honey from the deal but the chemical extermination order which kills the hive ruined all that! Dang. C'est la vie! The $1600 included extermination, removal and carpentry. I'll pat the carpenters their $800 buckaroos cause I think they earned it but that bee keeper was here for like 2 hours and made $800.
Emily, my parents had the same thing in their house in Utah, only they were settled behind the brick facade (which would've been a fortune to rip out and replace on the entire house)! They had bee keepers like 4-5 times because they kept rebuilding before they finally got rid of them. The honey would drip down the exterior wall and puddle in front of the garage. It was the weirdest thing!!
Maren- That is crazy! So far as we can tell they haven't returned. Knock on wood!
